For years I have heard about Jackson’s Kitchen, but had never had the opportunity to visit. Jackson’s Kitchen has been a part of Clover for many, many years. It began as a grocery and butcher shop, evolved into a catering business, then transformed into a catering business with a lunch counter.
I recently had lunch with Phil Wingard, a collector and expert on Edgefield Pottery and Stoneware. Phil suggested we go to Jackson’s Kitchen, and I eagerly agreed. I am not often in Clover at lunchtime, and wasa glad to have the opportunity to visit this iconic establishment!
Jackson’s Kitchen prepares fresh, homemade lunch specials daily, as well as a variety of sandwiches, burgers and salads. Bread is homemade as well, and the aromas are heavenly as you walk thru the door!
A refrigerated case displays homemade chicken salad, pimento cheese, potato salad, liverwurst, and lots of other country temptations to take home.
I enjoyed a hot pimento cheese quesadilla (spiked with jalapenos!) and a hot fried apple pie. Fantabulous! Phil had a Philly Cheesesteak, because it had his name in it. It looked quite tasty. Phil had a side of banana pudding, AND a fried peach pie, but I think in the South, banana pudding is considered a vegetable, so its allowed.
If you have a special event coming up, such as a family reunion, Easter dinner, or a potluck where you want your dish to impress, you can call Jackson’s and order up a pan of lasagne, a complete holiday dinner, or a buffet for a hundred.
No fancy tablecloths or maitre d’ at Jackson’s – - you order at the counter and bus your own table – - but the food is fresh, the staff is friendly, and you’ll likely be dining with the mayor or school superintendent or other delightful folks of Clover (the town with love in the middle).
