BBQ on Wheels – It’s a Southern Thang

I think it is a uniquely Southern, or perhapes even Carolinian, experience to buy BBQ from trucks parked in gas stations and vacant lots along the side of the road.  Around Lake Wylie, there are several places to find these BBQ trucks on a regular basis – - for instance, Ron’s Pig Palace parked at the Walgreens every Tuesday and Thursday, Hunter’s Hog Heaven hanging out at the vegetable stand across from Bi-Lo, several others that escape my mind at the moment.

Why do we stop at these places rather than the brick-and-mortar establishments that are not exactly in short supply?  (BBQ is, after all, the Official State Food of the Carolinas.)  I’m not sure I can answer that.  It could be the aroma that grabs us as we stop at the traffic light, or the thought that we don’t have to walk ALL THE WAY INSIDE to order.  (We’d hate to exert ourselves and burn the extra calories to take the extra steps, right?)

All I can tell you is that any time I”ve stopped at these BBQ trucks, the food has been darn good.  Yesterday I purchased a $4 sandwich from Ron’s (parked outside the Walgreens – - it was the aroma at the stoplight that got me.)  There was probably a half pound of ‘cue on those buns.  Okay, no comments about where that half pound of ‘cue is now, thank you very much.  It could have been a little saucier to satisfy my tastes, but it was quite delicious.

A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a 4-pack for the family from Hunter’s Hog Heaven (about $20, complete w/ beans and slaw).  It was supposed to feed four, but I think we made at least ten sandwiches over the course of a few days.  I have such a delicate appetite, you know.

So, high marks for taste, convenience, value.  You just have to get your days right.  For more blogs about Lake Wylie restaurants, plus Living in Lake Wylie, visit our website! Thanks for reading!
