For years, the folks on Allison Creek have been about 8 miles from grocery stores, gas stations, and restaurants of any kind. Just recently, a couple of pizza places have begun delivering to homes on Allison Creek, but the choices are few and rarely arrive hot.
So – - when the new Walmart center opened in Newport, I was excited to see a few take out places open up as well. This area serves the southern end of Lake Wylie, including Rock Hill addresses (off Mt Gallant) and Allison Creek.
Being a fan of sushi, I was really glad to see Koizumi Express open up in the Walmart shopping area. I figured with a name like Koizumi, sushi was a given!
Not so, I’m sad to report. The quick serve Japanese restaurant has entree selections including Hibachi Steak & Chicken, sauteed flounder, shrimp, scallops and Yakisoba Noodles. The prices range from $5.25 (Hibachi vegetables) to $15.50 (Steak, Chicken & Shrimp combo).
We gave it a try, ordering one entree of Hibachi Steak ($6.95), and one Yakisoba Noodle with Shrimp and Broccoli ($7.95). The Steak entree came with fried rice, sweet carrots (very sweet!!), and 4 oz sauce.
The shrimp selection was very tasty. The steak, however, was a disappointment – - tough, well done, and unimpressive. The fried rice was okay. The portions were generous, and we split the two dishes to have a “combo”. The combo’s are priced $9.95 – $15.50, and I’m not sure the portions are significantly more than the single entree selections, which are priced $5.25-$8.95. So I’d recommend doing what we did – - order a single portion of two or more items and split them up!
Overall, on a scale of 5 – - I’d give them a 3.
Taste – 3
Service – 5
Presentation – 3
Price – 4
